Suicide Prevention App for Australian Aboriginals
INSIST (Indigenous Network Suicide Intervention Skills Training) is a suicide prevention app designed to train suicide responders to spot the signs of someone struggling and hold an immediate intervention. The ultimate goal of the suicide prevention app was to help suicide responders stop crises from happening several steps back.
Three Key Stages
- Understanding The Users:
- According to the findings of the University of Queensland's INSIST research programme, community responders wanted something that they could use right away and didn't need to spend too much time learning. The research also indicated that trainees learn more effectively when they are actively engaged.
- As a result, our team of UX/UI designers and front-end developers decided to convey information in an engaging, consistent, and accessible way while facilitating an intuitive user interface and interactive e-learning experience.
- Sketch And Design:
- We mapped the user journey and created a clear hierarchy of information for a seamless user interaction flow. We sketched the wireframe to establish the app structure, flow and functionality.
- We used visual cues to let responders easily find help spots, highlight where they are and how far they have come, and guide them to their next step.
- We ensured there was adequate white space between text, photos, columns, and margins to reduce clutter and make content simpler to digest.
- We designed the UI components in Photoshop and Illustrator by incorporating well-known UI patterns so users can quickly access the information they need.
- Prototype and Test:
- We designed a low-fidelity prototype of the app screens. We tested the prototype in terms of user flow and experience to identify areas for improvement.
- After implementing the improvements, we used Figma to design a high-fidelity prototype for more accurate visualisation of the app screens and to depict the process of program interaction with the user.
- Testing the interactive prototype helped us solve most usability challenges and attain user satisfaction at the very beginning.
What you will find in INSIST
- The INSIST mobile app is now being used to train suicide responders in managing people at risk of suicide.
- Responders use the mobile app to practise intervention by walking through a life plan, accessing a directory of local support services, communicating with other INSIST responders, taking notes, and scheduling reminders.
- They can maintain a checklist to help them act swiftly in a crisis and revise training as necessary.
- In its simplest terms, INSIST keeps people safe by boosting knowledge, awareness, and a sense of connectivity between at-risk groups and health providers or support groups.
